Bureau Veritas Makes Waves at Seafood Expo Global 2025

May. 19 2025

Bureau Veritas, a world leader in testing, inspection, and certification, proudly participated in the Seafood Expo Global 2025, held in Barcelona from May 6–8. This premier international event brought together seafood professionals and buyers from around the world to explore cutting-edge innovations in sustainable fisheries and marine certification.

Over three days, our team connected with like-minded sustainability advocates and potential partners, united by a common mission: protecting ocean health and advancing sustainability across the seafood supply chain. The expo served as an ideal platform for us to showcase our ongoing commitment to ocean stewardship and community empowerment.

Our delegation was led by key experts in the field with international experience. Together, they highlighted Bureau Veritas' broad certification portfolio and engaged in strategic discussions with industry stakeholders to address critical sustainability challenges and opportunities. A standout moment was our participation on the launch of Community Catch, a groundbreaking standard designed to improve market access for small-scale fisheries. This initiative aligns perfectly with our vision of a thriving ocean economy that leaves no community behind.

Setting the Standard in Certification

Our presence at the expo underscored Bureau Veritas’ leadership in Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) fisheries certification—an essential component in driving responsible fishing worldwide.

Our team also explored the Certified Seafood International (CSI) standard, which is benchmarked by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) and rooted in the UN FAO guidelines. In aquaculture, we delved into the GLOBAL G.A.P. Integrated Farm Assurer (IFA) Aquaculture standard—the only scheme recognized by GSSI, GFSI, and animal welfare organizations. We also gained insights into the newly introduced ASC Farms Standard, a unified framework covering all species and farming practices.

Navigating a Changing Regulatory Landscape

The expo also illuminated important regulatory updates, such as the Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability and the new EU Directive 2025/794. This directive delays sustainability reporting requirements for companies with fewer than 500 employees by two years, while larger firms must comply as of January 1, 2024. Staying informed about such shifts allows us to better support clients as they adapt to the evolving compliance environment.

A Clear Vision for the Future

Seafood Expo Global 2025 reinforced the growing market demand for certification in sustainability, food safety, and social responsibility. Bureau Veritas is fully equipped to meet these needs. Our team uncovered promising new business opportunities in both aquaculture and seafood processing certification services

Our participation reaffirmed Bureau Veritas' unwavering dedication to preserving marine ecosystems, uplifting fishing communities, and driving sustainable practices throughout the seafood industry. Through strategic collaboration, innovative certification solutions, and ongoing portfolio development, we continue to lead the charge toward a healthier, more resilient seafood sector.

We leave the expo energized by the innovation and passion we witnessed. With renewed motivation, we look forward to expanding our partnerships and continuing to deliver trusted sustainability services around the globe.
